(Dalatiidae)
Kitefin Sharks
Змієподібні акули
The Dalatiidae are the family of kitefin sharks of the order Squaliforme. Members of this family are small, under 2 m long. They are found in tropical and temperate waters worldwide across the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans. They have cigar-shaped bodies with narrow heads and rounded snouts. Several species have specialized bioluminescent organs. Though eight genera are in this family, three of them are monotypic.
Several species lead a semi-deep-sea lifestyle and are typically found at depths of up to 4,000 m. They feed on small fish, as well as benthic crustaceans and mollusks. These sharks are oviparous.
